Programme
Overview
Arcangelo and a stellar ensemble present An English Baroque Journey: stirring anthems from Pelham Humfrey to Handel’s majestic Psalms. Rediscover the choral brilliance of 17th-century England’s Chapel Royal in a heartfelt tribute to Greta Hemus.Step into the vaulted grandeur of England’s restored Chapel Royal in 1662 as Arcangelo and a handpicked vocal ensemble revive the fervent spirit of English Baroque. Under expert direction, they unveil emotionally-charged anthems by Pelham Humfrey, Maurice Greene and Matthew Locke – music of intricate counterpoint, radiant harmonies and sincere devotion that once moved Samuel Pepys to marvel at its newfound fullness. From Humfrey’s poignant laments through Greene’s dignified grandeur to Locke’s elegant melodic flair, each anthem unfolds with expressive clarity before reaching its apex in Handel’s sweeping setting of words from the Book of Psalms. Dedicated to the memory of Greta Hemus, this concert celebrates the richly textured legacy of the Chapel Royal and invites audiences on a transcendent journey through the golden age of English sacred music.
