Experience the unadorned confession of A Hymn to God the Father and the profound spiritual drama of The Holy Sonnets of John Donne in a concert of timeless elegance.Renowned tenor Allan Clayton invites you on a compelling voyage across two illustrious chapters of British art song. In the first half, he evokes the refined elegance of Restoration London, where courtly airs and intimate lute songs are reborn in shimmering clarity. Joined by two specialist keyboardists—one on harpsichord, one on piano—Clayton then transitions to the mid-20th century, illuminating Elizabeth Maconchy’s unpretentious devotional confession in A Hymn to God the Father and unpacking the dark spiritual tension of Benjamin Britten’s The Holy Sonnets of John Donne, first unveiled in 1945. This program weaves devotional fervour, poetic introspection and historical authenticity into an evening of transcendent musical storytelling.
