Teatro Principal de Alicante is the main theatre in Alicante for hosting cultural festivals, concerts, dance and opera. The theatre is nearly 160 years old and was constructed on the initiative of its architect Emilio Jover. Initially, it was named Teatro Nuevo, but later on, renamed as Teatro Principal.

On September 23, 1845, twenty-one of the most important merchants of the city, two aristocrats and two families of owners held a meeting in which the idea of ​​building a theater arose. They stated that the city of Alicante "lacked a theater worthy of its culture" since the existing ones were improvised in inappropriate places. "Seventeen days were enough for this society of twenty-five people to break down in all its parts." The City Council, by agreement of October 18, 1845, gave the necessary land.

On January 2, 1846, the works of what was then called THE NEW THEATER began in the Plaza del Barranquet to differentiate it from the existing old theater in Liorna street. It was inaugurated on September 25, 1847. Ten years later it was renamed THEATER OF ALICANTE and shortly after THE MAIN THEATER.
