Musical theatre of the Republic of Karelia

The Musical Theater of the Republic of Karelia is the State Opera and Ballet Theater in Petrozavodsk. The theater's repertoire includes musical and stage genres: opera, ballet, operetta, musical comedy, musical.

The Musical Theater of the Republic of Karelia was founded in 1955. It is located in a building designed by the outstanding architect S. Brodsky; the pediment and friezes adorn the works of the famous Russian sculptor S. Konenkov. On November 5, the Musical Theater opened its first season with the premiere of I. Dunaevsky's operetta "Free Wind". For half a century, the theater's repertoire has presented performances of all musical and stage genres: classical and modern operetta, musical comedy and musicals, opera and ballet. Many works of Karelian composers were first seen on this stage. The theater glorified the production of the first Karelian ballet "Sampo" (1959). In 1987, its creators - composer G. Sinisalo, choreographer I. Smirnov - and the performers of the leading parties became laureates of the State Prize of Russia named after I. M.I. Glinka.

Today the Musical Theater of Karelia is the largest stage in the republic, equipped with modern equipment. Its auditorium is designed for 607 seats, and the team of artists, creative workers, and technical personnel numbers about three hundred people. The repertoire is based on opera and ballet performances.
