Megaland

Megaland is an event site in Schaesberg, Landgraaf municipality, in the Dutch province of Limburg. The site covers an area of approximately 27 hectares and owes its fame mainly to the 3-day Pinkpop festival, which has been held here annually since 1988 and attracts an average of 60,000 visitors a day. In addition, the site is used for other events such as markets, exhibitions, car shows, balloon festivals and kite parties.

The site is located on the territory of Park Gravenrode, the green heart of Parkstad Limburg, together with attractions such as GaiaPark, Mondo Verde and SnowWorld.

History

Megaland was created in 1995 on the site of the Limburg Trotting and Race Track (DRL), which was built in 1982 during the restructuring of the site of the former Wilhelmina coal mine and the Oranje-Nassau II mine, which were completed in 1969 and 1971 respectively. were closed. This was the site of the Steenberg of the Oranje-Nassau II, which was partly excavated and leveled before the construction of the racecourse. In 1987, the Pinkpop organization of the Burgemeester Damen Sportpark in Geleen decided to move to the DRL in the following year, because the location was many times more suitable and spacious and the festival could grow better. Equestrian sports, on the other hand, suffered a loss and for that reason it was definitively stopped in 1993, making it uncertain what would happen with the field. In order to ensure the future of Pinkpop, the site was turned into a full event area in 1995 and renamed "Megaland".

Services

In addition to the lawns, the site also has a large hall of 1800 m², where smaller events can be held such as browsing markets, fairs and conferences. In 2000, Megaland also had a cycling track of approximately 1,600 meters long built, where competitions and training sessions can be held. There is also an open-air cinema on site.
