Kalmar Theatre

Kalmar Theater is definitely one of Sweden's most beautiful theaters. The theater was designed by architect Bror Carl Malmberg and inaugurated in 1863.

When the Kalmar Theater was inaugurated in 1863, only about 8,000 people lived in Kalmar. Many of them were children.

The construction of Kalmar Theater was completed in time. Although it can be a bit strange to spend money and energy on such a stately building in a city the size of Kalmar at the time.

It went well for Kalmar. Much because of the Crimean War because the war meant that many other countries were blocked. During this time, the new bourgeoisie also emerged with new ideas and demands that could be seen in urban planning.

The bourgeoisie's view of education and hygiene, responsibility, and social morality contributed to the construction of many new buildings. Among other things, the prison that was built in 1851 and a hot bathhouse that was completed in the 1850s.

In 1842 came the general primary school charter and in the 60s new primary schools were built on Kvarnholmen, Ängö, and Malmen. In 1902 a permanent fire brigade was organized and two years later a new fire station was built.

Today Kalmar Theater is run as a guest performance stage and offers local, regional and national events.
