In the fall of 1940, the Gorky Musical Comedy Theater came on a six-month tour to Irkutsk. On October 17 the theatrical season was opened with V. Alexandrov's operetta "Wedding in Malinovka". In March 1941, at the request of the Irkutsk people, the theater was stationed in Irkutsk and became known as the Irkutsk Regional Theater of Musical Comedy.

In 1961, Honored Artist of the RSFSR Nikolai Matveevich Zagursky was appointed director of the theater, who made a huge contribution to the development of theatrical business in the region. In the same year, a ballet studio was opened at the theater.

In 1990, the theater received the status of a musical theater, a new building, and on January 5, 1990, it opened its new season with the premiere of the opera Carmen by the French composer Georges Bizet.

Today the theater's repertoire includes over 30 performances in theatrical genres: rock opera, ballet, operetta, musical.

In Irkutsk, the theater is known for its performances: "Scarlet Sails", "Jesus Christ - Superstar", "The Bat", "Juno and Avos", "Truffaldino from Bergamo", "Casanova" "Crazy Dance, or 5 Weddings in One Day", "Sevastopol Waltz" and many others ...

The theater timed the premiere of "Scarlet Sails" to coincide with the anniversary holidays: in the spring of 2016, the theater celebrated its 75th anniversary.
