The Collegio Papio is a Roman Catholic secondary school in Ascona, Canton Ticino, Switzerland.

History

On the initiative of Charles Borromeo, it was built in 1585 in the style of the Renaissance after a project by Tibaldo Pellegrino from the Valsolda. The money came from the Ascones Bartolomeo Papio (1526-1580), who had become rich in the service of the Orsini in Rome. He gave up his Palazzo in Ascona to provide all his property for the construction of a Jesuit college to the home community. The building was built next to the church of Santa Maria della Misericordia, which belonged to a Dominican monastery, and served as a seminary and college. Worth seeing are the Renaissance court and a bas-relief of 1602 at the north entrance. In 1882 the monastery was subjected to secularization, was re-established in 1885 the Apostolic Administrator in the subsequent diocese of Lugano and led by various religious orders: 1894 to 1910 by the Salesians of Don Bosco, 1910-1917 of the Assumptionists and from 1924 to 1964 by the Benedictines of the Einsiedeln Monastery, appointed by Aurelio Bacciarini. Thereafter, the quorum was entrusted by Angelo Jelmini to the leadership of the diocesan clergy.
