Visit some of the wonders of the city on a tour that starts from Piazza San Francesco and winds through the streets of the historic center to reach 5 of 8 World Heritage Sites including the Basilica of San Vitale, the Basilica of Sant'Apollinare Nuovo and the Chapel of St. Andrew.The 6th-century Basilica of San Vitale is one of the most important monuments of early Christian art in Italy. As you enter the basilica, your gaze will be captured by the high spaces, the large frescoed dome, the beautiful mosaic decorations of the apse and the extraordinary representation of the imperial couple of Byzantium: Justinian and Theodora, with their corteges.The Basilica of Sant'Apollinare Nuovo, once a palatine church for Arian worship, allows visitors to retrace the evolution of Byzantine wall mosaics from the Theodoric age to the Justinian period. Admire the 26 Christological scenes that make up the largest monumental cycle of the New Testament.The Chapel of St. Andrew is the only example of an early Christian archiepiscopal chapel still intact today. The visit culminates with the contemplation of its mosaic depicting the glorification of Christ in an anti-Arian key.
