Overview
"In the footsteps of Socrates" is one of the best walks of Athens as it combines the history of Philosophy with the beauty of Athens. Ancient Greece was the birthplace of Western philosophical ethics; Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle are considered to be instrumental in the way philosophy has evolved up to today. Join your guide and set off on a lovely walk visiting some of the most important landmarks allowing you to understand the way of life and how Philosophy evolved in ancient Athens.Starting off the walk you will visit the site of "agora" (market); the agora was where Athenians would express freely their opinions and discuss current issues. A beautiful site is full of amazing history. From the ancient agora, the site continues on to Philopappos Hill which has such a huge significance in Socrates's life. It not only houses the prison in which he was held but also the Pnyx. The role of the Pnyx of Ancient Athens is as important today as it was then; it is where the democratic ideals and principles were born. From the top of the hill, the view of the Acropolis is magnificent. Make your way downhill via the pedestrian street full of small caffees and street vendors towards the Hadrian’s Arch and the temple of Olympian Zeus. Passing these awesome monuments continue your walk towards the Lyceum (the school Aristotle founded). On this beautifully laid-out walk, you will pass by landmarks of Athens –including the National Garden and the Zappeion grand hall. The last stop of the tour is the Lyceum which has just been excavated and opened to the public in 2014. A beautiful setting set right in the center of the modern city of Athens - Your guide will explain the significance of the location and also what Athens used to look like in Ancient times. Walking through the Lyceum pathways you will actually be retracing the footsteps of the great philosophers of ancient Athens. It is the connection, and continuation, of ancient to modern times that really makes the walk stand out as one of the most fascinating tours of Athens.
