Overview

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's Requiem in D minor is a work of profound spiritual power and expression.

Although only about two-thirds of it is actually Mozart's own, it is one of his most popular and highly regarded works. Mozart died during its composition. As it was a commissioned work, Joseph Eybler and Franz Xaver Süssmayr, Mozart's pupils, completed the Requiem at the behest of Constanze Mozart, the composer's widow. The history and quality of these later additions have long been the subject of intense debate. Furthermore, the unusual circumstances of the commission and the timing of this Requiem Mass in conjunction with Mozart's early death have given rise to a wealth of myth-making.

The first half of the concert opens with the energetic overture to Mozart's comic opera "Le nozze di Figaro," often considered Mozart's most successful stage work. Following this, Teo Gheorghiu will perform Mozart's Piano Concerto No. 21. The Swiss pianist performs worldwide with renowned orchestras and has released two albums inspired by cycling tours through France and Spain, and from Switzerland to Romania. The former was awarded the Diapason d'or. He began his career at the age of twelve with a concert at the Tonhalle Zurich, which was recorded for the film "Vitus," in which he played the eponymous protagonist.

Mozart wrote the cheerful Piano Concerto No. 21 in just four weeks in the spring of 1785, opting, as with his Piano Concerto No. 20, composed shortly before, for a larger orchestra with more wind instruments and timpani. The work gained further fame when, nearly 200 years after its composition, it was used in the Swedish film "Elvira Madigan," which gave it the corresponding nickname.

The Tonhalle Zürich, having undergone a complete programme of renovation between 2017 and 2021, has now been restored to its former glory.

Built at the turn of the 20th century, the Tonhalle has seen many changes in the course of its history. Partially demolished, the building was extended with the addition of the Kongresshaus; much of its original ornamentation was removed; its colourful decoration was toned down and then restored. However, the two concert halls remained substantially unchanged – which is particularly fortunate, as the Grosse Tonhalle is acoustically one of the world’s finest concert venues.

The entire complex is now classified as a historical monument. Thanks to the Zurich electorate, which in 2016 voted by a large majority in favour of a complete renovation, the venue now meets today’s varying requirements both in the auditorium and behind the scenes – and has been restored to its former glory. Following the renovation programme lasting from 2017 to 2021, the Grosse Tonhalle’s old tonal brilliance has also returned.
