Overview

Violinist Alena Baeva is said to possess a "magnetic stage presence" and a passionate musical curiosity—qualities that have helped her earn a reputation over the past few years as a captivating and versatile soloist on the world's stages.

Before she takes the spotlight twice in this program, we immerse ourselves—courtesy of Swiss composer Othmar Schoeck—in a sensuously warm summer night; a welcome treat at this time of year, nestled between two works from the far North! Yet the music of Finland’s national composer, Jean Sibelius, proves to be anything but cool, as demonstrated by two of his spirited, playful *Humoresques* for violin and orchestra. Following these virtuosic flights of fancy, Alena Baeva turns to the Violin Concerto in D minor by the then 13-year-old Felix Mendelssohn—a work that unleashes a tempestuous, Romantic expressive intensity within a Classical framework. Preceding this, the Zurich Chamber Orchestra performs the expressive and melodically rich String Quartet by Fanny Hensel—Felix Mendelssohn’s older sister and lifelong close musical confidante—composed twelve years later.

Venue Info

Tonhalle Zürich - Zurich
Location   Claridenstrasse 7

The Tonhalle Zürich, having undergone a complete programme of renovation between 2017 and 2021, has now been restored to its former glory.

Built at the turn of the 20th century, the Tonhalle has seen many changes in the course of its history. Partially demolished, the building was extended with the addition of the Kongresshaus; much of its original ornamentation was removed; its colourful decoration was toned down and then restored. However, the two concert halls remained substantially unchanged – which is particularly fortunate, as the Grosse Tonhalle is acoustically one of the world’s finest concert venues.

The entire complex is now classified as a historical monument. Thanks to the Zurich electorate, which in 2016 voted by a large majority in favour of a complete renovation, the venue now meets today’s varying requirements both in the auditorium and behind the scenes – and has been restored to its former glory. Following the renovation programme lasting from 2017 to 2021, the Grosse Tonhalle’s old tonal brilliance has also returned.
