Programme
Overview

Another visit from the promising young Franco-American pianist Paul Ji, for a programme of Chopin.

The young Franco-American pianist Paul Ji studied philosophy at Yale University and piano at The Juilliard School. He graduated from Yale with a degree in Philosophy and was awarded the prestigous Louis Sudler Prize for Excellence in the Performing and Creative Arts, Yale’s highest distinction in this field. He trained for ten years with Qin Yingming, winner of the 1981 Long-Thibaud Competition, and received his Artist Diploma from the École Normale de Paris under the guidance of Jean-Bernard Pommier. A laureate of Carnegie Hall’s American Protégé Competition, Paul Ji won the Steinway International Competition seven times between 2010 and 2018. He was selected to represent France at the Steinway Music Festival at Hamburg’s Laeiszhalle and won the Berlin Rising Stars Grand Prix. He has performed four times at the Berlin Philharmonie since, including performances of both of Chopin’s piano concertos in 2024 and 2025. He has also appeared at Vienna’s Golden Hall of the Musikverein and at the Annecy Music Festival. In 2019, at the age of fifteen, he won the French television programme Prodiges and released his debut album on Warner Classics. Following prizes at international competitions in the United States and Europe, he embarked on a professional career as a recitalist, performing on prestigious concert stages worldwide.

This recital marks the release of Paul Ji’s Chopin album with Warner Classics—an album devoted entirely to the music of Chopin. For his second appearance at the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées, he presents a programme reflecting the composer’s poetic depth, lyrical refinement and extraordinary virtuosity—qualities he interprets with elegance, nobility and profound sensitivity.

Programme:

Chopin Ballade No. 3, Nocturne Op. 48 n° 1, Etudes Op. 10 No. 4 & Op. 25 No. 11
Walz Op. 34 No. 1, Sonata No. 2 Op. 35, 24, Preludes Nos. 15, 16 & 24 Op. 28, Mazurkas Op. 24, Scherzo No. 1 Op. 20, Fantaisie op. 49
Andante spianato and Grande polonaise brillante op. 22

Venue Info

Théâtre des Champs-Elysées - Paris
Location   15 Avenue Montaigne

The Théâtre des Champs-Élysées is an entertainment venue situated near Avenue des Champs-Élysées, from which it takes its name. Its eponymous main hall may seat up to 1,905 people.

Commissioned by impresario Gabriel Astruc, the theatre was built from 1911 to 1913 upon the designs of brothers Auguste Perret and Gustave Perret following a scheme by Henry van de Velde, and became the first example of Art Deco architecture in the city. Less than two months after its inauguration, the Théâtre hosted the world premiere of the Ballets Russes' Rite of Spring, which provoked one of the most famous classical music riots.

At present, the theatre shows about three staged opera productions a year, mostly baroque or chamber works more suited to the modest size of its stage and orchestra pit. It also houses an important concert season. It is the home venue of the Orchestre National de France and the Orchestre Lamoureux and serves as a French base for the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra as well.

The Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France, the Orchestre des Champs-Élysées and Ensemble orchestral de Paris play most of their concerts here too, along with other dance, chamber music, recital, and pop events.
