Overview

The Boston Ballet presents three iconic pieces from its repertoire by Jorma Elo, William Forsythe, and Jiří Kylián.

For almost 60 years, the repertoire of this American East Coast company has included both the “classics” (Petipa, Noureev, Balanchine, John Cranko, etc.) and big names from the world of contemporary dance (William Forsythe, Jiří Kylián, Wayne McGregor, Mark Morris, Christopher Wheeldon, Jorma Elo). This reflects the high level of technical ability displayed by the company and its dancers which allows them to showcase such diverse repertoire worthy of the world’s finest ballet companies. In 2002, Finnish dancer Mikko Nissinen, whose career spans both Europe and the United States, was appointed artistic director of the Boston Ballet. The ambitious artistic approach which he fosters here is demonstrated by the programme selected for this evening: Bach Cello Suites by Jorma Elo, which is perfectly attuned to the intimate aspect of the masterpiece by the Cantor of Leipzig, followed by Blake Works III by the hugely talented Forsythe, and the legendary Bella Figura by Jiří Kylián. Flitting between dream and reality, between the visible and the invisible, Bella Figura (1995) is a suite of exquisitely harmonious baroque duets, trios and quartets, constructed around music from the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Dance explores the aesthetic ambiguity of theatrical and musical performance.

Venue Info

Théâtre des Champs-Elysées - Paris
Location   15 Avenue Montaigne

The Théâtre des Champs-Élysées is an entertainment venue situated near Avenue des Champs-Élysées, from which it takes its name. Its eponymous main hall may seat up to 1,905 people.

Commissioned by impresario Gabriel Astruc, the theatre was built from 1911 to 1913 upon the designs of brothers Auguste Perret and Gustave Perret following a scheme by Henry van de Velde, and became the first example of Art Deco architecture in the city. Less than two months after its inauguration, the Théâtre hosted the world premiere of the Ballets Russes' Rite of Spring, which provoked one of the most famous classical music riots.

At present, the theatre shows about three staged opera productions a year, mostly baroque or chamber works more suited to the modest size of its stage and orchestra pit. It also houses an important concert season. It is the home venue of the Orchestre National de France and the Orchestre Lamoureux and serves as a French base for the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra as well.

The Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France, the Orchestre des Champs-Élysées and Ensemble orchestral de Paris play most of their concerts here too, along with other dance, chamber music, recital, and pop events.
