This Restoration-era masterpiece weaves a captivating tale of playful courtship and heartrending loss, as Venus, goddess of love, pursues her mortal beloved Adonis through sparkling recitatives and stirring choruses. The evening opens with Henry Purcell’s inaugural ode for Charles II, Welcome, Vicegerent of the Mighty King, a jubilant celebration that ushers in baroque fanfares and vibrant ensemble writing.
