Programme

Overview

Feel the vibrant energy of Britten’s St Nicholas – a wild, colourful cantata of prison breaks, pickled boys and seafaring miracles, performed by BBC Singers and Britten Sinfonia 50 years after the composer’s passing. An atmospheric tribute by Arvo Pärt opens an evening of transformative choral brilliance.Marking exactly fifty years since Benjamin Britten’s passing, this evening unites the BBC Singers and Britten Sinfonia to unleash the irrepressible spirit of St Nicholas, a cantata bursting with colour, drama and joyous invention. Through bright brass fanfares, playful woodwind flourishes and shimmering string textures, Britten retells the wild stories of Saint Nicholas – from miraculous prison breaks and the rescue of boys from a pickling barrel to daring voyages across stormy seas – with some of his boldest music. Joined by Arvo Pärt’s atmospheric tribute, with its hauntingly suspended harmonies and contemplative stillness, the concert becomes a vibrant celebration of genius, inviting audiences into a world where tradition is upended and every miracle seems possible.
