Programme

Overview

Step back to the mid-19th century as the Waldstein Trio and violist Jonathan Barritt bring to life the soulful piano quartets of Clara and Robert Schumann alongside Brahms’s autobiographical finale. From Clara’s Viennese triumph to the ‘Werther’ Quartet’s intimate confessions, this chamber concert fuses passion, history and artistry.Join the celebrated Waldstein Trio—violinist Greta Papa, cellist Christos Fountos and pianist Miguel Ángel—together with violist Jonathan Barritt for an evocative chamber recital tracing the storied creative bond between Clara and Robert Schumann and Johannes Brahms. The evening opens with Robert Schumann’s radiant Piano Quartet in E-flat major, premiered in Leipzig in 1844 under Clara Schumann’s hands. Clara’s own Piano Trio in G minor follows, a work that captured Vienna’s imagination at its 1847 debut. The programme culminates in Brahms’s final Piano Quartet in G minor—often called the “Werther” Quartet—composed during his years living with the Schumanns and infused with his unspoken devotion to Clara. Warm, intimate and richly textured, this programme unfolds over two hours, including a 20-minute intermission.
