Programme

Overview

Experience a captivating fusion of science, art, and music as we trace the epic journeys of migratory birds. Join ornithologist Peter Holden, artist Andy Holden, and The Hermes Experiment quartet for a sweeping live performance that illuminates the wonder—and urgent challenges—of our feathered travelers. In this one-of-a-kind live event, ornithologist Peter Holden brings four decades of field study and photography into dialogue with artist Andy Holden’s vibrant visual designs, while The Hermes Experiment quartet weaves a newly composed score blending melodic themes, graphic notation, and improvisation. Through a richly illustrated lecture, the performance journeys from fantastical early theories of bird migration and the discovery of the ‘Arrow Stork’ to cutting-edge advances in ringing, radar, and satellite tracking. As images of astonishing migratory feats appear, the music alternately surges and whispers, underscoring both the peril and the ecological necessity of these long-distance travelers. Featuring additional works by Élisabeth Jacquet de La Guerre and Abel Selaocoe, the evening celebrates the interplay of scientific insight, imaginative artistry, and the enduring mysteries of the natural world.
