Originally premiered in 1859 and later transformed into the orchestral Serenade we know today, the work’s original manuscript lay hidden until 1987, when Rotter traced its intimate designs within Brahms’s orchestration. This revival illuminates the transparent dialogue between clarinet, horn and bassoon and the warm interplay of strings, evoking the chamber splendour of Beethoven’s septet and Schubert’s octet.
