Beginning with spirited ballads and broadsides that once echoed through village halls, the programme weaves serene carols and elegant dances into an immersive soundscape. Traditional melodies from Britain and Ireland appear alongside works by leading composers of the era, blending humble folk tunes with the refined art of the court. The singers’ rich harmonies shimmer over the gentle pulse of lute, viol and harpsichord, evoking the warmth of flickering candlelight even in the darkest winter nights. From stirring processional tunes to lilting dance rhythms, each piece unfolds like a story, inviting listeners to rediscover the vibrant tapestry of Christmas music as it was first celebrated.
