Overview

Join the Royal College of Music Opera Studio for an evening of contrasts: Debussy’s L’enfant prodigue delivers a richly orchestrated tale of homecoming, while Ravel’s magic realist fantasy conjures everyday objects into song. Stellar young voices illuminate every expressive detail in two one-act masterpieces. Experience a seamless journey from heartfelt parable to playful enchantment.Experience the poignant arc of a timeless parable in Debussy’s one-act opera L’enfant prodigue. Within a warm Mediterranean-inspired courtyard, a young man’s yearning melodies and a father’s embracing lines unfold through Debussy’s radiant orchestration. The Royal College of Music Opera Studio’s singers imbue every phrase with subtle shading, from the son’s fragile confession to the father’s triumphant forgiveness. Next, journey into Ravel’s singular vision of magic realism, where ordinary objects awaken with song and dance. Sleek vocalists transform into dancing teacups, rustling leaves, chattering beasts and whispering fabrics, all set against a shifting musical tableau of glittering riffs and playful rhythms. Ravel’s score sparkles with wit, balancing childlike imagination with refined orchestral detail. This captivating double bill weaves emotional gravitas and imaginative delight into a single evening. Audiences will be swept from heartfelt drama into a world of bewitching fantasy, lured by sumptuous melodies, artful staging and the boundless creativity of tomorrow’s operatic talents.
