Overview

Kucha, situated at a crucial point on the northern route of the ancient Silk Road, was a crossroads of four major world civilizations. In the vast galaxy of Chinese civilization, Kucha shines like a brilliant pearl traversing millennia, its diverse and integrated culture radiating unique charm and enduring brilliance.

Kucha culture flows with the imprints and bloodlines of various ethnic groups throughout history. From the patrons in the cave murals depicting people in Hu clothing to the multi-ethnic rhythms of the "Sumu Zhe" dance, the intermingling of cultures creates a vibrant tapestry of Xinjiang's history and culture, and a vivid testament to the unity of diversity within Chinese civilization. The dance drama "Kucha" follows these imprints, weaving together the journeys of Kumarajiva to the east and Xuanzang to the west across time and space, bringing the fusion and evolution of Kucha's culture and art to the stage.

The dance drama "Kucha" brings together a diverse group of talents. Tong Ruirui serves as the chief choreographer, and Han Ziyong, a scholar of literature and history, is the screenwriter. The main creative team includes producer Li Dong, composer Guo Sida, executive choreographers He Tao and Wang Peng, set designer Qin Liyun, costume designer Yang Donglin, visual director Wang Han, choreographers Li Hongjun, Wei Wei, Gulijianati Shatar, and Fu Yangxue, multimedia designer Hu Tianji, lighting designer Liu Zhao, costume designer Xu Bin, prop designer Lei Peng, and many other domestic artists. The dance drama is primarily composed of young dancers from the Xinjiang Art Theatre Song and Dance Troupe and Xinjiang Normal University, in collaboration with outstanding young dance artists from across the country.

Synopsis

At the Caotang Temple in Chang'an, when Kumarajiva passed away, countless memories surged like lightning across the mountains and seas…
In the ancient city of Kucha, after the revelry of the "Su Mu Zhe" dance, Jiva, the sister of the King of Kucha, saw the scattered bones outside the city and, overcome with grief, took her son, young Kumarajiva, and entered the Buddhist order. Kumarajiva sought out renowned teachers and his fame spread far and wide. Jivaka entrusted Kumarajiva with the mission of spreading Buddhism in the East, which became his lifelong commitment. Emperor Fu Jian of the Former Qin Dynasty wished to invite Kumarajiva to Chang'an to preach, but General Lü Guang conquered Kucha, forcing Kumarajiva to break his vows. Enduring humiliation and hardship, he followed Lü Guang eastward across the vast desert, his mother's entrustment as clear as a spring in the green trees.
Kumarajiva stayed in Liangzhou for seventeen years, studying Central Plains culture. After arriving in Chang'an, he translated countless scriptures, transforming his life's insights into countless brilliant words: affliction, consciousness, compassion, freedom, the river of love, the sea of suffering, enlightenment, the world… More than two hundred years later, Xuanzang re-entered the vast desert, traversing its boundless expanse.
