Festival

Hong Kong Arts Festival 2027

The 55th Hong Kong Arts Festival takes place in February and March 2027, featuring nearly 1,500 international and local artists in more than 190 performances across approximately 45 programmes.

Overview

A passionate dance of a wordless Hamlet. A stage built on illusion

Hamlet is Shakespeare's longest and most psychologically complex play. For the “theatre magician” Robert Lepage, however, the story's power persists even when its words fall away. He joins forces with Guillaume Côté, the Principal Dancer and Choreographic Associate of the National Ballet of Canada, to transform Shakespeare's tragedy through dance, music and his signature theatrical illusions. Expect a visually striking Hamlet that reveals the prince's inner world in a way you may have never seen before.

This production contains stroboscopic lighting effects

Venue Info

Lyric Theatre, The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts - Hong Kong
Location   1 Gloucester Road, Wan Chai

Lyric Theatre, The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts is one of Hong Kong’s principal venues for large-scale performing arts, offering a professional stage for opera, ballet, musicals, dance and theatre. Located on the Academy’s waterfront campus in Wan Chai, the theatre forms part of an institution renowned for training performers and creative professionals across a wide range of disciplines.

With a seating capacity of 1,181, the Lyric Theatre combines the scale required for major productions with the flexibility to accommodate a variety of performance styles. Its auditorium is arranged across three levels — Stalls, Circle and Gallery — providing different perspectives on the stage. The theatre’s substantial performing area and adjustable proscenium opening allow it to host productions with elaborate sets, large dance ensembles and complex theatrical staging.

The venue is particularly well suited to ballet and opera, as well as touring musicals and dramatic productions. Its technical facilities include extensive side and rear stage areas, a flexible forestage and an orchestra pit that can accommodate approximately 30 or 60 musicians, depending on its configuration. These features make the theatre adaptable to productions ranging from classical repertory to contemporary performance.

Beyond its role as a performance venue, the Lyric Theatre benefits from its association with The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts, an important centre for professional arts education in Asia. Academy productions share the programme with performances by visiting companies and external organisers, creating a varied calendar that reflects both Hong Kong’s cultural life and international artistic exchange.

Situated close to the waterfront and the lively districts of Wan Chai and Admiralty, the Lyric Theatre offers visitors an opportunity to experience Hong Kong’s performing-arts scene in a purpose-built professional setting. From classical ballet and opera to ambitious musical productions, it is a versatile stage where artistic training, international performance and the cultural energy of Hong Kong meet.
