Overview

There are thousands of reasons why an operetta is gorgeous. The scent of a landscape, the flair of an era, the accents of a language so as the taste of a special way of life and the immeasurable force of its melodies. These elements are the expression of a human desire for a joyful existence, back then and now. Timeless and universal, Wiener Blut, based on the music by Johann Strauss II and restored shortly after his death, is witty, light and sentimental, it gets in your blood and asks to be listened with your heart.

The operetta Wiener Blut is set around the 1815 Congress of Vienna, convening European monarchs to restore the old regimes to balance each other´s powers and remain at peace. My staging unfolds the scent of this time and the historical fact, that the numerous social occasions surrounding the main political event have been conquered by a new dance, the Viennese Waltz. This revolutionary social dance is the secret star of the Viennese operetta: ignoring the old moral conventions it’s connecting men and women closer as allowed before. In Wiener Blut the waltz whirls all characters into sensuality: the formal rules are subversively turned into the full outpouring of desire and lust, leading up into a joyful frenzy.

History

Wiener Blut (Viennese Blood) is a sparkling operetta by Johann Strauss II, presented by the Kraków Opera and directed by Giorgio Madia. Set during the Congress of Vienna in 1815, this witty and romantic production combines enchanting waltzes, passionate encounters and comic misunderstandings in a celebration of Viennese elegance, love and joie de vivre.

Synopsis

Vienna, 1815: as European leaders gather for the Congress of Vienna, the city becomes a centre of political negotiations, lavish social events and romantic adventures. Amid the elegant salons and grand celebrations, Count Zedlau finds himself caught in a web of complicated relationships and unexpected encounters.

His marriage, romantic affairs and the desires of those around him create a series of comic misunderstandings, secret meetings and flirtatious complications. As the characters attempt to conceal their true feelings while maintaining appearances in high society, their carefully constructed plans begin to unravel.

The Viennese waltz sweeps everyone into a whirlwind of passion, jealousy and joyful confusion, challenging the strict social conventions of the time. Through sparkling music, dance and humour, Wiener Blut celebrates love, sensuality and the irresistible spirit of Vienna.

Krakow Opera - Krakow

The long list of names of renowned artists associated with the Opera Krakowska, includes conductors such as Kazimierz Kord, Robert Satanowski, Jan Latham-Koenig, Roland Bader and Aurelio Canonici; set designers such as Tadeusz Kantor, Lidia Zamkow, Józef Szajna, Krystyna Zachwatowicz; and a plethora of opera singers, many of whom began their careers there, including Teresa Żylis-Gara and Wiesław Ochman.

The Opera Krakowska, active today, was founded in 1954 in postwar Kraków, Poland, although the tradition of opera in the city dates back to 1628 when the first ever full libretto in Polish was released by the local publishing house, followed by the first fully-fledged opera performance in the city in March 1782. The Kraków Opera company stages 200 performances each year, including ballet, operettas and musicals for the young, with an audience occupancy rate of 98%. The Kraków Opera's main repertoire includes both international and Polish operatic classics, reaffirming its status as one of the country's leading opera companies.

For dozens of years, the Kraków Opera, now located at Lubicz 48 Street, lacked its own premises and instead used a number of concert venues in the city. The only permanent stage where the opera performances were staged for decades was the landmark Juliusz Słowacki Theatre in Kraków Old Town. The construction of the new opera house which can seat 760 people started in 2004. The new house opened in the autumn of 2008.
