Overview

A ballet premiere directed and choreographed by Jacek Tyski to the music of W. A. Mozart. The Requiem in D minor is one of Mozart’s greatest sacred works and, at the same time, his last, unfinished composition. The score was completed by the composer’s friend Joseph Eybler and his student Franz Xaver Süssmayr. The work is deeply rooted in Christian tradition and will be presented using the language of dance.

This exceptional ballet performance, accompanied by a stirring performance by the Soloists and the Krakow Opera Choir, will serve as a prelude to thoughts on life and death, and the story told through dance and music will lead us into a state of contemplation and reflection.

History

Requiem is a powerful contemporary ballet by the Kraków Opera, choreographed and directed by Jacek Tyski to the hauntingly beautiful music of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Combining expressive dance, live orchestral music and the moving voices of the opera’s soloists and choir, this evocative production explores the universal themes of life, death and the human experience.

Synopsis

Inspired by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s Requiem in D minor, this contemporary ballet explores the profound journey between life and death through the universal language of music and movement.

Rather than following a conventional narrative, the production unfolds as a symbolic and emotional meditation on human existence. The dancers embody the struggles, hopes, fears and spiritual questions that accompany the human journey, while Mozart’s solemn score provides a powerful musical reflection on mortality and transcendence.

Performed by the Kraków Opera Ballet alongside vocal soloists, choir and orchestra, Requiem brings together dance, music and theatrical imagery to create an immersive experience of contemplation and reflection. The result is a moving exploration of the fragility of life, the inevitability of death and the search for meaning beyond the boundaries of human existence.

The long list of names of renowned artists associated with the Opera Krakowska, includes conductors such as Kazimierz Kord, Robert Satanowski, Jan Latham-Koenig, Roland Bader and Aurelio Canonici; set designers such as Tadeusz Kantor, Lidia Zamkow, Józef Szajna, Krystyna Zachwatowicz; and a plethora of opera singers, many of whom began their careers there, including Teresa Żylis-Gara and Wiesław Ochman.

The Opera Krakowska, active today, was founded in 1954 in postwar Kraków, Poland, although the tradition of opera in the city dates back to 1628 when the first ever full libretto in Polish was released by the local publishing house, followed by the first fully-fledged opera performance in the city in March 1782. The Kraków Opera company stages 200 performances each year, including ballet, operettas and musicals for the young, with an audience occupancy rate of 98%. The Kraków Opera's main repertoire includes both international and Polish operatic classics, reaffirming its status as one of the country's leading opera companies.

For dozens of years, the Kraków Opera, now located at Lubicz 48 Street, lacked its own premises and instead used a number of concert venues in the city. The only permanent stage where the opera performances were staged for decades was the landmark Juliusz Słowacki Theatre in Kraków Old Town. The construction of the new opera house which can seat 760 people started in 2004. The new house opened in the autumn of 2008.
