Overview

“It's an opera for children because it attempts to recreate my own childhood. You see, when I was a child, I lived in Italy, and in Italy there is no Santa Claus. I suppose Santa Claus is too busy with American children to attend to Italian ones as well. Our gifts were brought to us by the Three Kings. (...) I owe those Three Kings, above all, the joyful Christmases of my childhood, and I should have remained very grateful to them. Instead, I came to America and soon forgot about them, because here, during the Christmas season, you see so many Santas scattered all over the city. Add to that the huge Christmas tree at Rockefeller Plaza, the elaborate store windows on Fifth Avenue, the hundred-voice choir at Grand Central Station, the countless Christmas carols on the radio and television—and all of this made me forget about the precious, old Three Kings of my childhood.
But in 1951, I found myself in serious trouble. I had been commissioned by the National Broadcasting Company to write an opera for television, with a deadline of Christmas, and I didn’t have a single idea in mind. One November afternoon, as I was strolling somewhat gloomily through the halls of the Metropolitan Museum, I happened to stop in front of Hieronymus Bosch’s painting The Adoration of the Kings, and as I looked at it, I suddenly heard once again, coming from the distant blue hills, the strange song of the Three Kings. That’s when I realized they had returned to me and brought me a gift.”

This is how Gian-Carlo Menotti described, in the original program booklet, what inspired him to create the opera Amahl and the Night Visitors. Menotti emphasized that while working on Amahl, he did not consider the characteristics of a television studio (which offered entirely new possibilities for visual presentation). His goal was universality, distinctive of “an ideal stage that has no counterpart in reality.”

The directing of the production Amahl and the Night Visitors was undertaken by Włodzimierz Nurkowski. He has previously staged productions for the Krakow Opera such as The Rape of Lucretia, Hansel and Gretel, Mr. Marimba, Cabaret Lunaire, Orpheus in the Underworld, Gianni Schicchi/Pagliacci, The Turk in Italy, The First Wrinkle, and Ariadne on Naxos. What will his vision of Monetti’s “television opera” be like?

History

Amahl and the Night Visitors is a heartwarming one-act opera by Gian Carlo Menotti, presented by the Kraków Opera. Set on Christmas Eve, this touching story follows a young boy and his mother as they encounter the Three Kings on their journey to visit the newborn Jesus, discovering the true meaning of generosity, faith and love.

Synopsis

On Christmas Eve, young Amahl lives with his mother in a modest home. One night, three distinguished travellers—Caspar, Melchior and Balthazar—arrive at their door, seeking shelter on their journey to Bethlehem to pay homage to the newborn Christ Child.

The visitors carry precious gifts for the child, and Amahl and his mother are fascinated by their story. Although the family has very little, they welcome the kings and offer them what they can. When Amahl's mother, overwhelmed by their wealth and her own hardship, attempts to take some of their gold, a moment of conflict arises.

Moved by the situation, Amahl makes a selfless decision that changes everything. His act of generosity leads to an extraordinary miracle, bringing hope and joy into the lives of the boy and his mother.

Through beautiful music and an intimate, heartfelt story, Menotti's opera celebrates the transformative power of kindness, faith and unconditional love.

The long list of names of renowned artists associated with the Opera Krakowska, includes conductors such as Kazimierz Kord, Robert Satanowski, Jan Latham-Koenig, Roland Bader and Aurelio Canonici; set designers such as Tadeusz Kantor, Lidia Zamkow, Józef Szajna, Krystyna Zachwatowicz; and a plethora of opera singers, many of whom began their careers there, including Teresa Żylis-Gara and Wiesław Ochman.

The Opera Krakowska, active today, was founded in 1954 in postwar Kraków, Poland, although the tradition of opera in the city dates back to 1628 when the first ever full libretto in Polish was released by the local publishing house, followed by the first fully-fledged opera performance in the city in March 1782. The Kraków Opera company stages 200 performances each year, including ballet, operettas and musicals for the young, with an audience occupancy rate of 98%. The Kraków Opera's main repertoire includes both international and Polish operatic classics, reaffirming its status as one of the country's leading opera companies.

For dozens of years, the Kraków Opera, now located at Lubicz 48 Street, lacked its own premises and instead used a number of concert venues in the city. The only permanent stage where the opera performances were staged for decades was the landmark Juliusz Słowacki Theatre in Kraków Old Town. The construction of the new opera house which can seat 760 people started in 2004. The new house opened in the autumn of 2008.
