Overview

Festive, virtuoso trumpet sounds - they were not yet a given in Haydn's time. Only the construction of a new type of keyed trumpet by the Viennese court trumpeter Anton Weidinger made such sounds possible. A revolution in instrument making that did not leave the elderly Haydn indifferent: Although he actually no longer wanted to compose instrumental concertos, in 1796 he was persuaded by Weidinger to write his very first concerto for this new instrument. It was also his last instrumental concert - and by far his most popular. Equally popular is Mozart's G minor symphony, which was also written in Vienna just eight years earlier. As fate would have it, however, he was probably never able to hear it - in any case, nothing is known about a performance during Mozart's lifetime. And you don’t know anything about a potential client either. So there is a lot of mystery surrounding one of the greatest works of Viennese classical symphony. Because of its key of G minor - in the same key Pamina sings her aria of pain in the "Magic Flute": "Ewig nach der Liebe Glück" - Mozart's Symphony No. 40 was viewed from the beginning as a sound reflection of his difficult life circumstances at the time. Although Mozart hardly ever incorporated biographical elements directly into his work, the emotional character of this symphony cannot be denied.
