Renaissance masterpieces by Phinot, Palestrina and Sheppard merge with three luminous new works composed specifically for the ensemble.In this Composer-in-Focus season, Nico Muhly’s three new choral works—No Resting Place, Recordare and A Glorious Creature—are presented by The Tallis Scholars, written to highlight the ensemble’s famed clarity and luminous sonority. Muhly’s contemporary language intertwines modern harmonies and rhythmic vitality with the textures of Renaissance polyphony, preserving balance and precision at every turn. These premieres sit alongside treasured masterworks by Phinot, Palestrina and Sheppard, with each pairing revealing shared texts, thematic echoes and stylistic affinities: the intricate counterpoint of Phinot and Palestrina resonates amid Muhly’s reflective lines, while Sheppard’s rich sound world and soaring soprano textures offer a vivid precursor to his A Glorious Creature. Together, these works create a single programme that bridges five centuries, inviting listeners into an evening of radiant harmony and timeless resonance.
