Phaedra Ensemble launches a bold new residency with Ellis Island: Meredith Monk’s landmark film paired with stirring music by Mansurian, Shostakovich, Weill and Dessner, capped by the UK premiere of Glass’s Piano Quintet. Embark on a transcendent journey through migration, memory and artistic reinvention.Step into the emotional landscape of Ellis Island, where Meredith Monk’s pioneering 1981 film becomes a living canvas for Phaedra Ensemble’s new residency. Projected in evocative black and white, the film traces the hopes, anxieties and quiet courage of migrants forging new lives against an imposing skyline. Surrounding this visual odyssey, the first half of the evening weaves ancestral melodies and contemporary elegies by Tigran Mansurian and Dmitri Shostakovich, whose compositions reverberate with echoes of homeland, displacement and resilience. After the interval, the focus shifts to reinvention in a modern metropolis. Philip Glass’s Piano Quintet, presented in its UK premiere, crackles with minimalistic urgency as a black grand piano converses with a string quartet. Bryce Dessner’s Aheym unfolds ancestral memories into bold new harmonies, while Kurt Weill’s September Song lingers with bittersweet lyricism. Together, these works illuminate how traditions travel, collide and emerge transformed, celebrating a shared legacy of cultural exchange. Ellis Island is not merely a performance—it is a voyage across time and sound, a tribute to the enduring power of music to bridge worlds.
