GBSR Duo, pianist Joseph Havlat and guests channel the fierce percussive drive of Martland’s Drill and Andriessen’s Worker’s Union, then transport you with Luke Lewis’ time-bending O Dreamland. Uncompromising energy and inventive sound await.In a dynamic collaboration for our Composer-in-Focus: Steve Martland series, GBSR Duo teams up with pianist Joseph Havlat and guest artists for an evening of uncompromising intensity. The program opens with Steve Martland’s Drill and Louis Andriessen’s Worker’s Union—two landmark works that propel percussive rhythms and ensemble interplay into realms of raw, collective power. Unapologetically direct, these compositions harness industrial momentum and political urgency, inviting listeners into a vivid dialogue between sound and social commentary. The second half unveils Luke Lewis’ O Dreamland, a time-bending soundscape that weaves historic seaside recordings, Martland’s own voice and echoes of his Liverpool maritime roots. Drawing on Lindsay Anderson’s realist portrait of Britain’s coast, this immersive score blurs past and present in a striking acoustic journey. Total duration is approximately 1 hour 50 minutes, including one interval.
