Don’t miss this captivating dialogue between past and present.Step into an immersive musical journey as Nico Muhly inaugurates his tenure as Composer-in-Focus for 2027 alongside his longtime collaborators, the celebrated viol consort Fretwork, and the luminous countertenor Iestyn Davies. This meticulously curated programme spans five centuries, drawing intimate connections between the rich polyphony of Renaissance masters—Thomas Byrd’s tender Ye Sacred Muses, Alfonso Ferrabosco’s intricate consort writing and Henry Purcell’s introspective O Solitude and Fantasia Upon One Note—and Muhly’s compelling modern voice in works such as My Days, Slow (In Nomine in 5 parts), Four Traditional Songs and Old Bones. At its heart lies the In Nomine tradition, a single cantus firmus that has woven through generations of English composition and resurfaces here in Muhly’s newly commissioned five-part In Nomine. As Fretwork’s resonant viols mingle with Davies’s ethereal countertenor and Muhly’s own presence on stage, each phrase becomes a testament to enduring dialogues between past and present.
