From William Byrd’s expressive motets to an evocative world premiere, this is an evening where ancient traditions and modern voices converge.For the first time, Festival Voices and Phaedra Ensemble join forces this Good Friday for a transcendent exploration of sacred music spanning over four centuries. The evening opens with William Byrd’s deeply expressive Renaissance motets, whose luminous harmonies set a reverent tone. Listeners are then drawn into Steve Reich’s “Know What Is Above You,” a contemporary reflection on ancient wisdom, before unveiling the world premiere of Vivek Haria’s “The Imperishable,” a daring new work that bridges past and present. Missy Mazzoli’s “Vesper Sparrow” follows, its shifting textures and evocative interplay of voices and instruments conjuring a profound sense of introspection. The programme reaches its climax in James MacMillan’s “Seven Last Words from the Cross,” a modern masterpiece celebrated for its intense emotional trajectory. Festival Voices’ radiant choral sonorities intertwine with Phaedra Ensemble’s chamber precision as each of the seven movements traces the final utterances from the Cross.
