Anchored by Joel Thompson’s powerful Seven Last Words of the Unarmed and featuring works by Price, Montgomery and Hogan, this concert explores loss, resilience and hope. Experience a musical testament to justice and solidarity.In a landmark first performance at Kings Place as part of the orchestra’s 2027 series, Chineke! Voices and Chineke! Chamber Ensemble unite for My Heart Be Brave—a programme that honours the enduring spirit of resilience and the call for justice. The concert opens with evocative spirituals and freedom songs, their stirring harmonies evoking a shared history of struggle and triumph. At its core, Joel Thompson’s acclaimed Seven Last Words of the Unarmed unfolds across seven movements, giving profound voice to the final expressions of unarmed Black men in a tapestry of raw intensity and tender lyricism. Florence Price’s Resignation follows, its graceful lines suffused with dignified melancholy, while Jessie Montgomery’s I Want to Go Home offers a poignant blend of nostalgia and hope. Michael Tippett’s luminous arrangement of Deep River and Moses Hogan’s majestic My Soul’s Been Anchored in the Lord deliver moments of soulful release before Marques L.A. Garrett’s uplifting title work My Heart Be Brave and Ken Burton’s stirring A Prayer bring the evening to a radiant close. Under the direction of a dynamic conductor, the fusion of choir, chamber strings and winds weaves an emotional journey from reflection to triumph, celebrating music’s power to heal and unite.
