Presented with pioneering works by Steve Reich, Philip Glass and Florence Price, this concert bridges ancestral rhythms and contemporary virtuosity. Immerse yourself in a kaleidoscope of rhythm, melody and colour.Four Chineke! percussionists present a vibrant celebration of percussion’s expressive breadth, traversing body percussion and traditional West African drumming to the luminous timbres of marimba and vibraphone. The programme spotlights pioneering American voices—Steve Reich’s elemental Clapping Music, Philip Glass’s hypnotic minimalism and Florence Price’s melodic ingenuity—juxtaposed with John Luther Adams’s Drums of Winter, which evokes sweeping natural vistas. Traditional Senegalese rhythms channel ancestral energy, while contemporary works by Andy Akiho, Darian Thomas, Yaz Lancaster and Caroline Shaw expand the instrumental palette with inventive textures. Emmanuel Séjourné’s virtuosic Akadinda Trio and Tim Collins’s jazz-inflected Buzzy John’s Blues add fresh colour, showcasing percussion’s remarkable stylistic versatility. From intricate, interlocking patterns to thunderous beats and shimmering mallet sounds, this programme reveals percussion as a dynamic force capable of driving rhythm, carrying melody and captivating audiences through sound alone.
