Ancient words, modern voices: Aurora Orchestra and the BBC Singers breathe new life into the timeless Psalms. From Bach’s radiant Magnificat to Bernstein’s playful Chichester Psalms and Nico Muhly’s fresh settings, this concert weaves a tapestry of memory, faith and joy.For over two millennia, the Psalms have carried human emotion—sorrow, joy and hope—across generations. Aurora Orchestra and the BBC Singers, joined by writer-artist Edmund de Waal, present a programme that traces these ancient words through three distinct musical voices. At its heart, Bach’s Magnificat brings the opulent spirit of Lutheran Leipzig to life with radiant choral forces and a kaleidoscope of orchestral colour. Bernstein’s Chichester Psalms echoes the sounds of his Jewish heritage in passages of tender lyricism, rhythmic playfulness and dramatic fervour. New settings by Nico Muhly cast the Psalms in a contemporary light, weaving fragmented motifs and delicate textures. Through de Waal’s reflections, this concert reveals the Psalms as living vessels of collective memory, binding past, present and future in song.
