Sink into a beanbag or choose a seat at the edge to feel every nuance of sound swirl around you.Aurora at Kings Place offers a century-spanning programme of American string quartets, performed up-close by the orchestra’s principal string players. It opens with Samuel Barber’s Quartet, whose second movement gave birth to his Adagio for Strings, unfolding in long, suspended lines of emotional intensity. Next, Jessie Montgomery’s Strum intertwines folk motifs with contemporary energy, moving from wistful yearning to vibrant exultation. The journey concludes with Antonín Dvořák’s ‘American’ String Quartet—its open melodies and rhythmic vitality evoking boundless horizons and infectious joy. With beanbags nestled among the musicians and chairs framing the circle, you choose whether to be at the heart of the ensemble or observe from its edge, feeling every bow stroke and dynamic swell as if woven through the room itself.
