From the explosive drive of Andy Akiho’s Seven Pillars to the cathartic climax of Reich’s Drumming Part 1, immerse yourself in a night of wit, playfulness and thunderous rhythms.Percussion enthusiasts are invited to an exhilarating evening as Colin Currie honours Steve Reich’s 90th birthday with a dynamic programme showcasing a new generation of composers. The concert ignites with Andy Akiho’s Seven Pillars, an explosive foray of rapid-fire patterns and driving momentum. Next, Ben Nobuto’s Daily Affirmation offers a playful interlude, its short, cheeky motifs teasing unexpected sparks of joy. A world premiere by Robert Honstein follows, unveiling an imaginative landscape imbued with a “spirit of play” that balances lyrical warmth with rhythmic wit. Camille Pépin’s gentle, flowing work for two vibraphones and two marimbas creates a luminous counterpoint, its shimmering lines weaving over resonant wooden bars. The climax arrives with Steve Reich’s Drumming Part 1: beginning with the simple pulse of a hi-hat, four drum kits interlock into intricate, pounding grooves that swell into a cathartic crescendo, delivering an unforgettable finale to a compelling programme.
