The recital opens with Schumann’s two violin sonatas, works renowned for their mercurial shifts between passionate intensity and heartfelt reflection. Drawing on a historically-informed approach, Faust and Melnikov combine meticulous phrasing with expressive freedom, illuminating every nuance of Schumann’s musical language. The first half also features Fantasiestücke, three short character pieces reimagined for violin and piano, each movement moving from tender lyricism to joyful exultation. In the second half, they present Brahms’s Violin Sonata No.1, a work that, while echoing the composer’s own Rain Song, radiates with luminous warmth and lyrical sunshine.
