Programme
Overview
Mythic passions collide with laughter in a night of Greek-inspired music and stand-up. From Britten’s haunting Phaedra to Haydn’s Ariadne, a mezzo-soprano’s riveting solos are punctuated by Natalie Haynes’s sharp wit. Celebrate 50 years since Britten’s passing in a captivating blend of drama and comedy.Immerse yourself in an unforgettable evening where the timeless passions of ancient Greek myth find new voice through some of music’s most compelling works. The event opens with Benjamin Britten’s late micro-opera Phaedra, voiced with haunting intensity by a sublime mezzo-soprano. Marc-Antoine Charpentier’s Medea unleashes furious vengeance, followed by Joseph Haydn’s tender lament for Ariadne, abandoned on a rocky shore. Interludes of shimmering ballet music by Igor Stravinsky and a luminous reimagining of a Monteverdi aria by John Woolrich carry you from darkness to delight. Throughout, mezzo-soprano Helen Charlston brings dark obsessions and heartfelt longings to life, while classicist and comedian Natalie Haynes offers sharp, laughter-filled commentary that reframes the archetype of the doomed woman. Marking the fiftieth anniversary of Britten’s death, this richly textured program blends drama, music and wit for an evening of profound emotion and joyous relief.
