Overview

“Lingyi” is an all-male Chinese-style dance drama combining martial-arts aesthetics, mythology and contemporary dance. It tells a story of an ancient general and a magical crane whose bond develops from an act of compassion into a story of love, sacrifice and devotion to the country.

During a time of war, a general rescues a seriously wounded crane. After recovering, the crane develops feelings for the general and learns how to take human form. When the general is later wounded in battle, the crane transforms its feathers into a magical protective garment, the “Lingyi”, hoping to protect him.

The general eventually returns to the battlefield, while the crane enters the human world. Their paths cross again, but suspicion and conflict threaten their relationship. The crane ultimately gives the Lingyi to the general, transferring his wounds to itself and sacrificing its own life for his safety.

The story then develops into a confrontation with the corrupted immortal who originally taught the crane to transform. The production uses four compact acts and focuses on themes of compassion, protection, sacrifice, loyalty and national duty.
