Overview

A passionate and fiery adaptation of Georges Bizet's classic opera, brought to life through intense flamenco footwork and vivid theatrical storytelling at the Chengdu City Concert Hall. Performed by the acclaimed Madrid Flamenco Dance Company (Ballet Flamenco de Madrid) under General Director Luciano Ruiz, this grand touring production features live musicians, an opera singer, and over 200 hand-tailored Spanish costumes to deliver a raw, visceral experience of unbridled romance and tragedy.

Set against the vibrant, sun-drenched backdrop of 19th-century Seville, the drama follows Carmen, a fiercely independent and tempestuous gypsy woman who works at a local cigarette factory. Her captivating charm ensnares Don José, a disciplined corporal in the military. Overwhelmed by desire, Don José abandons his duties, mutinies against his superior officer, and forsakes his childhood sweetheart to run away with Carmen into the rugged mountains. However, Carmen's untamed spirit refuses to be bound or possessed by any single man. Her affections quickly shift when she meets Escamillo, a dashing and glamorous celebrity bullfighter. Plagued by jealousy, public humiliation, and a shattered sense of honor, a desperate Don José confronts Carmen outside a packed bullringing arena. Through the fiery rhythms of continuous zapateado (footwork) and intense physical choreography, the drama builds to its fatal resolution, as Carmen proudly chooses death over a life without absolute freedom.
