Concert-pianist, Choral Conductor, Composer, Doctor of Musical Arts (D.M.A.) in Piano Performance- studied with Flore Levine (disciple of Emile Bosquet— who obtained the First Prize of the Anton Rubinstein Competition — and Professor at the Royal Conservatory of Music of Antwerp, Belgium). Carine Gutlerner has earned the First Prize in Piano at the Royal Conservatory of Music of Brussels, as well as many other First Prizes including those in Choral Conducting, Chamber Music and Music History. In Europe, she also studied with Frédéric Gevers, Antoni Besses, Robert Leuridan, Nicole Henriot and Pierre-Alain Volondat.
After her graduation from the Royal Conservatory of Music of Brussels, Carine Gutlerner was awarded a scholarship to continue her studies in the United States, where she attained a Master’s degree in Piano Performance at the University of Missouri-Kansas City. She subsequently accepted a position as Graduate Teaching Assistant at the University of Kansas where she received her Doctorate of Musical Arts (D.M.A.) in Piano Performance with honors, as well as another Master’s degree in Choral Conducting. She worked with Joanne Baker (disciple of Wilhelm Backhaus and President of the Gina Bacchauer Competition) and with Jack Winerock (disciple of György Sándor), and had Masterclasses with Claude Frank and Abbey Simon.
A frequent recitalist, Carine Gutlerner has received critical acclaim for her performances of both classical and contemporary music. At her regular recitals in New York, she was invited several times to perform at Carnegie Hall (she returns for another recital in 2019). One of those concerts was commented by Barry Cohen in the New Music Connoisseur: “Her playing is assured and geared to the cult of the solo artist in complete control (…) aSturm und Drang artist, also capable of offering genuine moments of calm and tenderness.” Carine Gutlerner is regularly invited in the Piano Concert Series “Autour du Piano” in Paris, and will perform at the Salle Cortot in 2020. She had other recitals in Paris (La Fondation Dosne-Thiers, L'Eglise Saint-Merry, Carnegie’Small, L’Archipel, La Cité Internationale Universitaire de Paris), in Deauville (Salon des Ambassadeurs at the Casino of Deauville), in Trouville (Salon des Gouverneurs at the Casino Barrière of Trouville, Notre Dame de Bon-Secours), in Brussels (‘Les petits Concerts du Sablon’, Pianos Maene), in Chicago (The Fourth Presbytarian Church), in Lawrence (University of Kansas), in New York (Merkin Hall, The Kosciuszko Foundation).
She recorded a CD with works of Franck and Mussorgsky (C.E.A. MUSIKA, 2012, available at FNAC), and another CD with works of Beethoven and Brahms (C.E.A. MUSIKA, 2014, available at the FNAC). A new CD will be released with the same production in September 2019.
In addition to her career as a Pianist, Carine Gutlerner is also well known as a Choral Conductor and as a Composer. She has composed and performed her own music at the piano, for the movie “Paul Delvaux : carnets de croquis et toiles” for the Centennial celebration of the painter at the Musée des Beaux Arts in Brussels. The movie obtained the Grand Prix de la qualité de l'image (Festival du film d'art de Paris) and the 1st Prize at the Festival of Asolo. She also composed, performed and conducted the music for the film “Anne Frank’s Diary” by Julian Wolff (Globe Trotter Network, France), where the main soloists were Laurent Korcia (violin), Philippe Bernold (flute) and Xavier Phillips (cello) as well as musicians from the 'Orchestre National de Paris'. The movie was selected for the Festival International de Musique et Cinéma d’Auxerre (France) and obtained theChildren’s Jury Prize at the International Film Festival in Chicago, aswell as the UNICEF Saskatchewan Award in Canada. Recently, Carine Gutlernercomposed and performed the music for the movie “Nana” .by Serena Dykman (Adleek USA Inc. 2016). The movie obtained many awards, among them the Alan Landburg Award, the Leon Award for the best documentary at the St. Louis International Film Festival, the best biography at the Palm Beach International Film Festival and was the winner of the Fargo Film Festival in the United States.
As a graphic artist, she published an Art Book (Traits de mémoire. Oeuvres graphiques. Text by André Lorant. Cohen&Cohen, editors. Paris, 2015, 362 p., 289 drawings). The book won the Prix Botticcelli in 2018.
In France, Carine Gutlerner is a member of the SACEM (Society of Authors, Compositors and Editors in Music), of the SPEDIDAM (Society for the Perception and the Distribution of the Rights for the Artists-Performers) and of the ADAGP (Society of the Authors in the Graphic and Plastic Visual Arts).
Dr. Gutlerner is a renowned teacher and is presently holding a Tenure Professor Position in Piano Performance at the Conservatory of Music in Paris Region (France). She also teaches Masterclasses in Europe and in the United States.
