Experience Saint-Saëns, Rachmaninov and Prokofiev brought to life by a gifted young soloist and ensemble.Prepare to be swept away by an hour of unabashed Romantic splendor. The evening opens with Saint-Saëns’ animated depiction of Death calling skeletons to dance at midnight, where swooning strings and the xylophone’s wooden rattle conjure a playful yet eerie soundscape. Next, Rachmaninov’s heartfelt symphony unfolds in expansive melodies that soar from its brooding opening—where hints of the Dies irae funeral chant linger—to a triumphant, thunderous finale. Finally, the program culminates in Prokofiev’s Violin Concerto, performed by Russian-born, Kansas-raised violinist Maria Ioudenitch. Her fierce intensity and lyrical grace illuminate every dashingly virtuosic phrase, drawing audiences into a world of Romantic drama and dazzling brilliance.
