Overview

Hamlet is William Shakespeare’s iconic tragedy in a new version by Wilke Weermann, directed by Ersan Mondtag. A haunting family drama about revenge, violence and the struggle to find meaning in a world in crisis.

Hamlet, Shakespeare’s most famous play, brings together a family drama, a revenge tragedy with gothic elements and a profound psychological study.

Haunted by the ghost of his father, Hamlet believes he must avenge his father’s alleged murder and set right everything else that is wrong in the world. But how can one person carry the weight of such a task?

In this new version, Ersan Mondtag and writer Wilke Weermann explore the self-destructive forces of a man who embodies the contradictions of a world order built on violence.

At the heart of the production is a family caught between different eras, surrounded by crisis and uncertainty. Hamlet’s personal tragedy becomes part of a larger question: what happens when the past returns as an undead history, and when the present can no longer provide a sense of direction?

With its gothic atmosphere and psychological intensity, Hamlet examines the relationship between personal responsibility, violence and the desire to restore a world that has lost its balance.

Synopsis

After the death of his father, Prince Hamlet is visited by his ghost, who claims to have been murdered by Hamlet’s uncle, Claudius. Now king and married to Hamlet’s mother, Gertrude, Claudius has taken the throne.

Convinced that he must avenge his father, Hamlet becomes trapped between the demands of the past and the realities of the present. His desire to uncover the truth and restore justice leads him into a destructive spiral of suspicion, violence and revenge.

Set against a family and a society undergoing profound change, this new interpretation of Shakespeare’s tragedy explores the psychological burden of responsibility and the consequences of trying to put a broken world back in order.
