Overview

A powerful solo theatre performance based on Oscar Wilde’s De Profundis, exploring love, loneliness, suffering and the struggle for freedom. Starring Jens Harzer and directed by Oliver Reese.

De Profundis is a compelling theatrical adaptation of Oscar Wilde’s famous prison letter to his lover, Alfred “Bosie” Douglas. Written during Wilde’s imprisonment in 1895, the work reveals the emotional and intellectual journey of a man stripped of his freedom, reputation and former life.

Through Wilde’s eloquent words, the production explores love, betrayal, pride, pain and the search for meaning in the face of suffering. It is a deeply personal reflection on a society that rejects what it does not understand, and on the resilience of the human spirit.

Directed by Oliver Reese and performed by Jens Harzer, this intense solo performance brings Wilde’s powerful writing to the stage in an intimate and moving theatrical experience.

Synopsis

Imprisoned in 1895 after being convicted of offences related to his sexuality, Oscar Wilde writes a long, deeply personal letter to his former lover, Alfred Douglas. As he reflects on their relationship, love, betrayal and the consequences of his choices, Wilde confronts the loneliness and suffering of prison life.

Deprived of his freedom and stripped of the life he once knew, he searches for meaning through writing and self-reflection. De Profundis becomes a powerful expression of pain, pride and the determination to reclaim life through art.

The Berliner Ensemble is one of the most prestigious and influential dramatic theatres in Europe.
