Overview

Uncover the dark heart of obsession with Gothic Opera’s La Dame de pique. Under Klaus von Wiehler’s moody direction, Danciger’s striking sets, Langrée’s vivid orchestration, and Panetta’s haunting portrayal of the Countess, Tchaikovsky’s masterpiece emerges in chilling new splendour.Presented by Gothic Opera, this new production of La Dame de pique transports audiences to the shadowed salons of 19th-century St. Petersburg. Under Klaus von Wiehler’s direction, Danciger’s stark, gothic-inspired sets and costumes evoke a world where reality and obsession intertwine. Conductor Langrée draws out Tchaikovsky’s lush, brooding score, guiding every swelling chord and tender lyric, while soprano Panetta delivers a mesmerizing portrayal of the enigmatic Countess. The young officer Herman, consumed by the legend of a secret card combination, summons the Countess to reveal a lost formula for winning—triggering a spiral of spectral visitations and psychological dread. From the hushed intimacy of private parlors to the electrifying crescendo at the clandestine card table, this staging weaves a chilling tapestry of fate, desire, and ghostly intrigue. Perfect for lovers of romantic drama and Gothic aesthetics, it promises an unforgettable evening of haunting beauty and dramatic suspense.
