Programme

Overview

Feel the fiery tension of Argentine tango and the playful brilliance of French orchestral dance as Chromatica Orchestra and conductor Oliver Cope unite Golijov, Soley and Poulenc in one unforgettable evening. From riveting bandoneón dialogues to a jubilant Sinfonietta finale, this concert promises passion, virtuosity and joyous rhythms.Under the inspired leadership of conductor Oliver Cope, Chromatica Orchestra embarks on a mesmerizing voyage through tango’s impassioned rhythms and Poulenc’s playful charm. The evening opens with Osvaldo Golijov’s Last Round, a tribute to Astor Piazzolla that translates the bandoneón’s characteristic expansion and contraction into sweeping orchestral gestures. Two string ensembles face each other in mirrored formation, their bows arching in sync as the music compresses into taut intensity before sighing into spacious lyricism. Next, Daniel Soley’s Accordion Concerto casts its soloist into a vivid dialogue with the full ensemble. Written to showcase the soloist’s “immense virtuosity and musicality,” the concerto moves from hushed intimacy to dazzling brilliance, as the accordion’s breath-like bellows converse with the orchestra’s vibrant sonorities, revealing moments of tender reflection and exhilarating intensity. The evening culminates in Francis Poulenc’s Sinfonietta, a sprightly tour through dance rhythms, folksy tunes and Parisian wit. The orchestra flits effortlessly between polished elegance and mischievous exuberance, delivering an unpredictable finale that sends the audience into the night uplifted and smiling.
