Overview
For a true flavour of Fuerteventura, get off the beaten track. With historic towns, farms, tastings and viewpoints, this tour gives you a real sense of island life. You'll explore Ajuy, Pajara and Betancuria, take in an aloe vera plantation and try local specialities at a goat farm. Francisco, one of our local guides, says, ‘Mojo sauces are a staple of Canarian cuisine. There are two kinds to try – spicy red and herby green. Mojo was invented here because this is where the key ingredients first came together. Olive oil and paprika from Spain, cumin from North Africa and chillies from South America.'Your first stop will be Ajuy to explore this fishing village and enjoy an optional walk to the sea caves hollowed out by the waves. Then, in Pajara, you'll check out the Aztec-inspired façade of Nuestra Señora de Regla church. Betancuria's flower-filled lanes and palm trees will charm your socks off, then it's time for the goat farm. Fuerteventura has a long tradition of goat farming, and the most celebrated result is majorero cheese. You'll sample some along with jams, mojo sauce and traditional Canarian honey-flavoured rum.Next up is a photo stop at Las Peñitas viewpoint on the way to the cheese museum at Antigua. After all those cheese facts, you'll be ready for your tapas lunch in a traditional Canarian restaurant with authentic flavours and local specialities on the menu. Round off the day with a visit to an aloe vera plantation and learn about the plant's reputed healing powers.
