Overview

Enjoying the skies of Rome from the top of the city’s most iconic monument: a stunning and unique view which is now accessible to all thanks to the new panoramic lift that from the XXVII fornix of the Colosseum reaches the highest levels of the cavea, particularly the gallery located between the 2nd and 3rd orders.

Built respecting the ancient masonry and totally reversible, the lift allows people with motor difficulties to overcome the hundred steep steps that separate the first order from the intermediate gallery. The Colosseum Archaeological Park has always been attentive to the issue of physical, cultural and cognitive accessibility and this is a further step towards inclusiveness and culture open to all.

The S.U.P.E.R. sites, an acronym for Seven Unique Places to Experience in Rome, whose special visit allows you to get to the core of Roman art and civilisation through immersive technologies and fascinating virtual narrations. The SUPER sites include Palatine Museum, House of Augustus, House of Livia, Aula Isiaca with the Loggia Mattei, Neronian Cryptoporticus, Santa Maria Antiqua, and Neronian Domus Transitoria.

An itinerary through the Roman Forum and the Palatine, connected by the Domitian ramp, which will lead visitors to discover ancient painting from the Augustan age, with the House of Augustus (from Tuesday to Sunday), to the late ancient and early medieval age with the church of Santa Maria Antiqua and the Oratory of the Forty Martyrs. On Saturday, Sunday and Monday it will also be possible to enter the Curia Iulia, the ancient seat of the Roman Senate.

What To Expect
  • The visit is open to all and barrier-free up to the intermediate gallery, which can be walked through its entire length; access to the third order is possible with a dedicated hoist.
  • The visit to the attic, on the other hand, remains possible only by climbing steep steps.
  • A five-stage educational path has been set up along the new route with panels in Italian and English illustrating the highest levels of the Colosseum’s cavea:
  • 1) The gallery between the 2nd and 3rd levels
    2) The water management system
    3) The tituli picti i.e. symbols, drawings and inscriptions made with red traces on travertine blocks
    4) The 3rd level
    5) The levels above the 3rd level (the attic)
  • The panels are accompanied by drawings and prints by Luigi Canina, conserved at the Biblioteca Casanatense.
  • On the occasion of the opening to the public, the intermediate gallery has been equipped with a lighting system that not only creates a very evocative setting, but also enhances some original portions of the white and red plaster coatings in which traces of the ancient and more recent occupations are still visible.
