Programme
Overview
Experience the music at the heart of Caroline Swinburne’s novel “Khrushchev’s Piano” in a special recital by acclaimed pianist Konstantin Lapshin. His programme journeys from the lyrical depths of Schubert and Chopin to the bold virtuosity of Rachmaninov, Scriabin and Balakirev, concluding with works by contemporary Ukrainian composer Valentyn Silvestrov. Enjoy an intimate drinks reception afterwards with the author and signed copies of the novel.Immerse yourself in Caroline Swinburne’s Khrushchev’s Piano, a novel that spans three generations of a musical family against the backdrop of the inaugural International Tchaikovsky Competition in Soviet Moscow. In this special recital, internationally acclaimed pianist Konstantin Lapshin brings the story’s essence to life, performing repertoire that anchors each chapter: the lyrical grace of Schubert’s impromptus, the expressive elegance of Chopin’s nocturnes, the sweeping drama of Rachmaninov, the visionary harmonies of Scriabin and Balakirev, and the poignant modernity of contemporary Ukrainian composer Valentyn Silvestrov. Under warm, intimate lighting, Lapshin’s nuanced interpretation will reveal every emotional contour, inviting the audience on a journey through time and memory. Following the performance, guests are invited to an elegant drinks reception with Caroline Swinburne and Konstantin Lapshin, where signed copies of Khrushchev’s Piano will be available and conversation can continue long after the final notes fade.
